Frequently asked questions

Billing, plans, API, webhooks, MCP, and integrations.

  • What's the difference between Pro and Vault?
Pro gives you everything in Starter plus 5,000 items, 10 GB storage, 500 AI processes/month, 50 AI questions, AI-powered semantic search, related items, archive, read-only API access, and one cloud backup connection. Vault includes everything in Pro plus unlimited items, 100 GB storage, unlimited AI questions, 2,000 AI processes/month, full Context Hub API access — webhooks, MCP, and integrations with ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI assistants.
  • How does AI work on the Starter plan?
Starter includes 10 AI processes per month (summaries, smart categories, and descriptions for your captures) and 3 AI questions per month (ask about any item). You choose when AI runs in Profile → Preferences. Upgrade to Pro for 500 AI processes and 50 questions per month.
  • Can I switch between monthly and annual billing?
Yes. Use the Monthly / Annual toggle on the pricing cards to see both options. You can manage or change your subscription (including switching interval) from Dashboard → Billing after you have an active plan.
  • How do I upgrade or change my plan?
Sign in and go to Dashboard → Billing. From there you can upgrade to Pro or Vault, or use the Stripe customer portal to change or cancel your subscription.
  • Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. Cancel or change your plan from Billing. You keep access until the end of your current billing period; after that your subscription ends and your account no longer has an active plan—you keep your data subject to the limits that apply to your account.
  • What can I capture, and what are the limits?
All plans support all input types: links, notes, images, photos, documents, files, voice notes, and items created via inbound email. Starter: 50 items, 250 MB storage, 5 shares. Pro: 5,000 items, 10 GB storage, 50 shares, 1 cloud connection. Vault: Unlimited items, 100 GB storage, unlimited shares, 5 cloud connections.

    Current capture-size limits:
    • Files/photos: up to 10 files per capture batch.
    • Per file upload: 20 MB max per file (images, documents, voice/audio uploads included).
    • Text captures: no fixed character cap in the UI today; request-size and plan storage limits still apply.
    • Voice notes: no fixed duration cap in the recorder UI today; effective limit is upload size and plan storage.
  • What is the Context Hub API and who can use it?
The Context Hub API is a REST API (v1) that lets other apps search your library, read context for AI, and create items. It is available only on Vault. You create API keys with scoped permissions in Dashboard → Security. The API is documented with OpenAPI 3.0; the schema URL is provided in Connections → AI assistants. Endpoints include GET /api/v1/search, GET /api/v1/context, and POST /api/v1/items. Authentication is Authorization: Bearer <key>. Rate limits apply per key and per session.
  • How do I connect ChatGPT, Claude, or another AI assistant?
You need a Vault plan (Context Hub API access). In Connections → AI assistants you get a schema URL (OpenAPI spec) and steps per provider. Create an API key in Security with at least Search and Read context (and optionally Write items). In your assistant (e.g. Custom GPT Actions, Claude connector), add the schema URL and set authentication to API Key / Bearer with that key. Private items are never returned by the API.
  • What webhooks does CapturedIt support?
Webhooks are available on Vault only. You can subscribe to item.created and item.updated. When an item is created or updated (via the app or the API), we POST a JSON payload to your URL with event, item_id, user_id, and created_at. Requests are signed with X-CapturedIt-Signature: sha256=<hex> (HMAC-SHA256 of the body using your webhook secret). Add and manage webhooks in Connections → Webhooks.
  • What is MCP and how do I use it with Cursor or Claude?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) lets MCP-compatible clients (e.g. Claude.ai, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf) use your CapturedIt library as context. This requires a Vault plan. Tools available: search_capturedit, get_context, save_item, and ask_capturedit.

Remote MCP (Claude.ai, Claude Desktop): Use our hosted MCP server at https://api.capturedit.app/api/mcp. In Claude.ai, go to Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, paste the URL, and sign in with your CapturedIt account when prompted.

Local MCP (Cursor, etc.): Run the CapturedIt MCP server locally with CAPTUREDIT_API_URL and CAPTUREDIT_API_KEY set, and point your MCP client at it. See Connections → AI assistants for setup details.
  • What cloud backups or exports are supported?
You can connect Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive to export optional backup copies of library items. Pro allows 1 cloud connection; Vault allows 5. Setup is in Connections → Backups & exports. Your primary library stays in CapturedIt; these are additional export destinations.

Existing users can manage billing, API keys, and integrations from Dashboard → Profile.
